Doing Las Vegas Like a Local

So, you’ve taken the plunge and decided to head to the glitz and glam of the city that never sleeps! There’s no doubt that a whole world of exciting times awaits you when you arrive, so why not make the most of your trip by cutting out the tourist traps and experiencing this incredible city like a local?

Yes, that might mean avoiding some of the more famous landmarks associated with Sin City, but with an estimated 42 million visitors to Las Vegas every year, dodging the crowds seems like a far more appealing option, doesn’t it? Plus, there is so much more to this crazy city than the regular tourist hot spots!

One of the first things you might want to do is hit up the Strip to check out the shows, clubs and restaurants, but this can be a pretty overwhelming experience. Spending your time fighting through crowds can get wearing very quickly, so instead, why not head to the downtown districts for a similar experience with a more relaxed vibe. It is much easier to walk between casinos, bars and restaurants downtown and there are far more cultural attractions such as museums, theatres and shopping compared to the Strip. 

No visit downtown would be complete without a stop at Fremont East Entertainment District (FEED), home to plenty of cafes, bars and lounges as well as abundant entertainment and colourful street life. It’s also worth paying a visit to the famous Arts District to check out the art galleries, studios and boutiques.

If it’s the glitzy lights of Vegas you’re after, the Neon Museum is also a must-see as it preserves and displays Vegas’s iconic signage. While you’re in the area, you could also head to the Container Park: a unique shopping centre consisting of shipping containers that have been converted into shops and boutique stores; though be careful of the giant fire-breathing mantis at the entrance! 

For those who prefer to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, there is plenty to do in the lakes and mountains surrounding it. Kayaking on Lake Mead is an amazing way to spend a super-hot day while a visit to the Arizona Hot Springs will make your trip one to remember.

There is plenty of hiking, camping, skiing and even sleigh riding opportunities if you take a short 45-minute drive from the city to the slopes of Mount Charleston. Around 20-30 degrees cooler here, it is a much more pleasant place to spend a hot Vegas day. Check out the waterfalls in the area or simply spend some time hanging out in the cool shade of the trees. If rock climbing is your thing, you can also head to Red Rock Canyon for the chance to scale the famous cliffs of red sandstone. 

Of course, nothing says “I’m a local” more than knowing how to save money while you’re exploring. Despite all the glitz and glamour of the famous city, it is actually possible to save money in Vegas by sticking to some basic rules. If you’re heading downtown, for example, instead of hiring a car or ordering a cab, take the bus! It’s a dream for anyone who loves people watching, plus it only costs $8.00 for a day pass. 

If you do take a cab, make sure you have smaller bills on you to avoid being caught out if the driver does not have enough change. Also, remember that there is a $3.00 charge for using your credit card to pay for taxis. Pre-book tickets for shows online to take advantage of discounts and book hotels during the midweek to get the best deals for your stay. Above all else, have fun!
