6 Digital Nomad Hotspots You Need To Check Out

17th March 2023

As a digital nomad, you literally have the keys to the world. In fact, the hardest part is choosing where to go next – especially when there’s so many options to pick from!

Internet. Affordability. Meeting the right people. Tropical weather. These are all things you’ll want to think about…

So how do you pick the perfect place? And how do you know what’s best for you?

Well below, I’ll walk you through some of the world’s best digital nomad hotspots you need to check out.

Every digital nomad should be using a VPN – Virtual Private Network. We’ve tried dozens of VPNs but found NordVPN to be the most reliable in terms of speed, ease of use, customer service and value for money.

1. Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai

If you’re on a budget, Chiang Mai may just be the perfect place for you. Seriously, I planned to stay in Chiang Mai for a week – and I only ended up leaving 3 months later! In fact, I’ve never lived anywhere so affordable in my life which is why it’s the most popular of the digital nomad hotspots.

Chiang Mai’s internet is incredibly fast. The food is amazing, especially the street food. And with the ever-expanding nomad community there, you’ll never feel lonely. I mean where else can you get 4G internet in the jungle?

If you’re going to live here, Nimman is the best neighbourhood to look. This place is crammed with great food, loads of coffee shops, plenty of digital nomads and it’s also very affordable

There are also weekly meetups for nomads, which you can learn more about here.

If you’re on your way to Chaing Mai, this is a great guide to renting an apartment in the city.

2. Bali, Indonesia

Bali is one of the most stunning islands I’ve ever been to in my life! Being an island though, the internet is a little bit ropey. Luckily, Bali also has one of the world’s best coworking spaces, Dojo.

This little gem is located 2 minutes from the beach of Canggu. And with daily networking events, a great bunch of people, a swimming pool and its own cafe, it’s hard to beat!

Ubud is also a really popular digital nomad hotspot in Bali. It’s a little quieter than Canggu but you’ll discover it’s cheaper, there are loads of healthy food options and the scenery is stunning! Check out these costs of living in Ubud for a month. So cheap!

Canggu is awesome if you’re looking for a great social life! Each year more and more remote workers are moving in making it one of the top digital nomad hotspots. But if you want to be more productive, Ubud is probably the better spot. If you go for Ubud, use this guide to renting an awesome villa

3. Medellin, Colombia

If you’ve watched Narcos, you’re probably picturing Pablo Escobar & the Medellin cartel right now. But here’s the thing. Medellin has transformed itself into South America’s most popular digtal nomad hotspot.

It’s safe, cheap and there’s fast internet everywhere. It’s even got a lower crime index than my old home of Manchester in the UK! And with stunning views like the picture above, who wouldn’t want to live here?

The main neighbourhood for nomads is El Poblado. With tons of gyms, cafes, great internet, coworking spaces, plenty of people and much more, you’ll love the lifestyle.

But you’ve also got plenty of choice with Envigado, Laureles & Estadio.

And if you want to practice your Spanish, Medellin is the place to be:

You see, not so many locals speak English here. Sure, you’ll get by with English but learning some conversational Spanish goes a long way. And of course, it’s not so hard to pick up once you get a bit of practice!

4. Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

Xcacel Beach

If you’re looking for a place full of culture, delicious food and some of the world’s best beaches, look no further than Playa Del Carmen. There’s nothing like a morning swim in the Caribbean to fuel your productivity in the afternoon.

The above photo is of my favourite beach, Xcacel – it’s stunning! It’s a little bit pricey, especially for Mexico, but don’t let that put you off – living in paradise is 100% worth it.

And when you’re working from a more expensive city, it encourages you to work harder & earn more.

5. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon has a tremendous growing community of digital nomads! Why? Because this city has so much to offer – including:

  • Great wifi.
  • Cheap living costs.
  • Tasty Portuguese food.
  • Beautiful weather (during the summer!)
  • Lots of coworking spaces including Fabrica de Startups & Cowork Lisboa.
  • And the rest of Europe is on your doorstep…so weekend trips away are incredibly easy!

Lisbon also has a lot of culture – with rustic back streets full of character. Exploring the city is always an adventure.

6. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is extremely highly rated – and it’s quickly becoming one of Europe’s top ranked digital nomad hotspots.

Plus, there are loads of options when it comes to coworking spaces in Budapest. You’ve also got plenty of cafes scattered around the city if you’re looking to work on the go. And if you like your beer, the alcohol is extremely cheap – the cheapest in Europe!

Sure, you’re not going to get the exotic feeling that Asia or Latin America offers but it’s a city that comes with a high-end Western lifestyle and affordability. Plus if you get too cold, there’s always Budapest’s famous thermal baths to warm you up.

Take Your Time & Enjoy The Journey

All of the cities mentioned above are incredible – and perfect digital nomad hotspots.

…But there’s no rush to see them all at once! Here’s my advice:

Enjoy the journey. Take your time in each country. And appreciate everything each of these stunning places has to offer!
